Match the chair to the table dimensions
The most important measurements are seat height, overall chair width and the available space between the table legs. A chair can look compact but still be too wide to fit the number of seats you want around a table. Armchairs also need enough clearance to slide underneath or sit comfortably beside the tabletop.
Choose materials for the way you use the room
Upholstered chairs add softness and comfort, while timber and wipe-clean surfaces may suit busy family dining areas. Benches can work well on one side of a table where you want flexible seating, although they create a different layout from standard individual chairs.
